Abstract

Organic plastic materials (e.g. phenolic &c. resins, acrylic, styrene, vinyl and cellulose plastics, waxes, rubber) are treated prior to metallising (silvering) with an aqueous solution of stannous chloride containing sufficient hydrochloric acid to render and maintain the solution clear during treatment, the preferred solution being:- Stannous chloride-360 gm., Hydrochloric acid (sp. grav. 1.2)-216 cc., Water-4000 cc. The organic material may first be depolished by e.g. abrading or by the use of a chemical depolisher such as acetone, trichlorethylene, nitric acid, ethylene chlorhydrin, or-in the case of cellulose plastics-caustic alkali. Silver may be deposited by reduction of ammoniacal silver nitrate solution, and the silver layer may be subsequently electroplated with any metal to form a layer which, if desired, may be peeled off. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of the following pre-treating solutions:-(a) stannous chloride 10-1000 gm., hydrochloric acid (sp. grav. 1.20) 216 ccm., water 4000 ccm., (b) stannous chloride 36 gm., hydrochloric acid (sp. grav. 1.20) 43 ccm., water 4000 ccm. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 296,459, [Class 82(ii)].
