Abstract

A colour base, of a type comprising a finely-divided pigment uniformly dispersed in a viscous liquid vehicle of considerable body, is prepared by a method comprising: (i) heating the pigment and vehicle to 80-90 DEG C.; (ii) mixing them together; (iii) circulating heating fluid through the roll of a mill of a special type, to heat the roll to 70-90 DEG C.; (iv) placing the hot mixture in the mill hopper; and (v) subjecting the mixture to the action of the mill while the roll is at 70-90 DEG C. and the grinding bar is thrust towards the roll with a force of from 190-240 pounds per square inch length of bite. The special mill is one which has a cylindrical power-driven roll, a grinding bar operating against the roll, a scraper for removing processed material, a hopper for feeding in material, and a vane extending from the grinding bar a short distance around the roll to form a wedge-shaped pocket leading to the bite, the grinding bar having two elongated operative surfaces facing the roll and separated by a narrow shallow recess leading back to the hopper. The grinding bar may carry a coating of a viscous liquid, e.g. blown castor oil, and the mill may have a roll of 26 inches axial length and a 10 degree vane, being, for example, a 26 inch Keenok mill. The colour base pigment may comprise titanium oxide, and the vehicle may be blown castor oil, "Sextol" (Registered Trade Mark) phthalate, or a mixture of blown castor oil and tricresyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate.
