655,857. Sharpening knives, scissors, &c. DRESSER INDUSTRIES, Inc. July 14, 1948, No. 18899. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1947. [Class 60] A grinding machine for sharpening knives, scissors or the like comprises an endless abrasive belt carried by a pair of pulleys, one of which is cup-shaped and is driven by an electric motor having on its shaft a driving surface such as a friction drive wheel engaging the inner periphery of the cup-shaped pulley ,the cup-shaped pulley and the driving motor being movably mounted in such manner that the cupshaped pulley and the motor are movable away from the other pulley, which is rotatable about a fixed axis, by the weight of the motor and driving pulley to maintain the abrasive belt constantly under predetermined tension and also maintain predetermined driving pressure between the driving surface of the motor shaft and the cup-shaped pulley. An endless abrasive belt 28, preferably of woven material, passes over a driving pulley 71 and an idler pulley 55. The driving pulley 71 is cup-shaped and has a crowned outer surface; its spindle 75 rotates in a bearing member 69 rotatably adjustable in a housing 67 at the end of an arm 64 of pivoting about a shaft 50 passing through a perforated lug 33 inside the casing 2. The interior of the pulley 71 is engaged by a friction wheel 52 on the shaft 51 of a highspeed lightweight motor 47 which by means of bracket 49 is pivotally supported from the shaft 50 which passes through further perforated lugs inside the casing 2. The belt 28 is thus automatically tensioned by the weight of the motor and driving pulley; these may be slidably mounted, instead of pivotally. The idler pulley 55, which is flanged, is mounted in an upwardly projecting portion 14 of the casing 2. Surfaces 19, 20 support the belt 28 and surfaces 29, 30 support and position the work during grinding. The side walls 5, 6 of the casing 2 are fitted with rubber or other resilient members 10. The fixed end well 7 of the casing 2 has louvres 9; at the other end is a door 36, also formed with louvres 37, pivoted to the casing 2 at 39 and held closed by a bell catch 41. The spokes 71a of the driving pulley 71 act as fan blades to circulate air to cool the motor 47. A switch 12 is provided, and a top cover is secured to the apparatus when it is not in use.
