655,825. Powder metallurgy; making commutator segments. ASKAM, E. S. Nov. 18, 1948, No. 29953. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A process for manufacturing commutator segments comprises pressing copper or copper oxide powder, graphite and stearin in a shaped mould, sintering the compact in a protective atmosphere and again pressing in a mould. Silica and/or beryllium powder may be added. The powders are between 100 and 400 mesh and preferably dendritic in shape. The compacts are pressed at 5 to 40 tons per square inch and sintered at 800-1080‹ C. for 5 to 30 minutes in a hydrogen, cracked ammonia or partially-burnt town gas atmosphere. They are then allowed to cool for 40 minutes in the same atmosphere and sized at 15 tons per square inch. A preferred powder mixture contains 2 per cent graphite and “ per cent stearin by weight.
