[Class 145(i)] [Also in Group XXII] A machine for making a knurled or checkered pattern on a work piece comprises the combination of a workholder and a marking instrument supported for relative movement, a master pattern having at least two sets, which cross each other, of relief lineations on the surface thereof, and a pattern follower supported for relative movement, the pattern follower having an elongated tracing edge which may be aligned with the direction of either set of lineations, there being means at the ends of each set of lineations for permitting the tracing edge to be fed from one channel to another of the selected set, and means for transmitting the relative movement of the master pattern and pattern follower to the workholder and marking instrument. Workpieces 25 are secured to flattened portions 20a of a shaft 20, supported by three uprights 22 and a major upright 28 which are mounted on a baseplate 23, one end of the shaft being reduced in diameter to allow a pattern drum 33, with a master pattern in relief on the surface, to slide over it and abut against a shoulder 35, the drum being retained by a collar 36 attached to a half-wheel operating handle 39. A spring-loaded pattern follower 41, which has a chisel shaped tracing lip for tracking along the lineations of the master pattern, fits into a holder 53 which is attached by a bracket 31 to the upright 28. The pattern drum 33 is fitted with sleeves 46 which act as limit stops for the tracing tip, the sleeves being kept in position by the thumbscrews 49. Rotary cutter marking instruments 68 are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of each workpiece, the members of each pair being pivoted at the baseplate 23 and spring loaded towards each other by springs' 82 so that the workpiece is cut to a depth limited by the noseguards 71. In operation the wheel 39 is rotated and moved axially to keep the follower 41 in the correct lineation of the pattern drum 33 thus causing the marking instruments 68 to mark out the pattern on the workpieces. At the end of the lineation the tracing edge is moved sideways along the smooth strip 48 to adjust it to the adjacent lineation. The Specification. as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the replacement of the cutting tools by electrical engraving tools, painting tools or other marking instruments and the replacement of one of the relief patterns by a plane surface picture pattern to be traced by a stylus. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
