Abstract

655,173. Driving belts. PETER, F., and PETER, R. March 2, 1948, No. 6535. Convention date, March 12, 1947. [Class 80(i)] A V-belt comprises friction members 1, Figs. 1, 3, arranged to be brought on to one or more flexible bands 3 and retained by a spring strip 5. Numerous modifications disclose different forms of friction member and means of retaining it on the band, the common features being that each member is in contact with that on either side of it, each has a slot therein in which the band lies, and each is so shaped that the inner surface of the belt has gaps forming " teeth." The members may be freely displaceable on the band, which may be formed of a plurality of wires or cords. In one modification a member is formed in two parts which are fastened together when assembled on the band. In another modification an inclined slit is provided through which the band may be passed into the slot. Several variations in the cross-sectional shape of a member are shown, and it may be bent below the band, in the direction of the length of the band, or wholly inclined to it. Alternate members may, Fig. 19, be members of different shape in side elevation or be members of half height. The members may be of an inverted U-shape in side elevation and have wedging pieces inserted into the U above the band. Several members may, Fig. 30, be formed in a continuous strip of material folded concertina-fashion and provided with slits 30 through which the band is passed into the recesses 29<SP>1</SP>. Finally, the members may be symmetrical about the band to enable the belt to engage pulleys on either side.
