Abstract
654,904. Silencing gaseous currents. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Oct. 14, 1948, No. 26810. [Class 7(ii)] A silencer for a gas 'turbine installation when running on the ground, either under test or operating a wind tunnel, comprises overlapping baffles 14 made of sound-absorbing materials and arranged to reflect the sound waves 13 emanating from the exhaust nozzle 10 and to induce a layer of cold air around the jet 11. The edges of the baffles adjacent the exhaust jet lie approximately in a'line corresponding with the edge of the jet cone. The baffles may be transverse to the sound waves as shown, or parallel to the jet axis 12. In addition to the two sets of baffles, seen in plan view, a further set may be provided above the jet. Alternatively they may be formed arch-shaped or annular. The baffles may be curved and have their left-hand ends only parallel to the jet axis 12. They are preferably made of perforated sheet-metal casings filled with sound-absorbing material and have a thickness which is one quarter of the lowest wave-length they have to absorb. The device may be mounted on a wheeled trolley. The nozzle' 10 may be elliptical or rectangular with the major axis parallel to the ground which is preferably covered with a thick layer of sound absorbing material.
