Abstract
654,758. Automatic frequency control systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and MUNNS, J. G. W. Nov. 15, 1948, No. 29645. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XL (c)] An ultra-high-frequency oscillation generator comprises a first high-frequency generator, the output of which is mixed with a second source of oscillations of substantially lower frequency, the sum or difference frequency being selected and detected to provide an electric signal proportional to the amplitude, which is applied in a feed-back path to vary the amplitude of the second oscillations so as to maintain the amplitude of the sum or difference oscillations constant. The invention is suitable for use with ultra-high-frequency generators in which it is difficult to apply amplitude control directly. In Fig. 1, the output from an oscillator 1 having a frequency of approximately 1000 megacycles, is mixed in frequency-changing device 4 with the output from an oscillator 2 operating at approximately thirty megacycles. The sum or difference frequency is selected and applied to the output point 5 after amplification in amplifier 7. The output is also applied to a detector 6 which supplies a control voltage proportional to the amplitude, which is used to control the amplitude of the oscillations from oscillator 2 either directly or by varying the gain of amplifier 3, so that the amplitude of the oscillations at point 5 is maintained constant. In an alternative arrangement, the lower frequency oscillations before being applied to amplifier 3, are obtained from the difference frequency resulting from mixing the output from oscillator 1 with that from a crystal-controlled oscillator the output of which includes a high order harmonic content, so that the difference frequency is relatively low, and of the same order as that from oscillator 2 in Fig. 1. The control voltage in this case is used to vary the gain of the amplifier 3. An automatic frequency-control arrangement may also be associated with the circuit described.
