[Class 44] A barrel lock, shown in transverse and longitudinal sections in Figs. 2 and 4, comprises a rotatable carrier c of square section and adapted to rotate in a fixed tube b against the inside surface of which it bears through its corners. The upper side of the carrier is slotted to pass a locking lever d pivoted on a pin d<1> on the carrier. In the locking position the lever d engages a recess b' in the tube b and the carrier is thereby secured against rotation. On either side of the lever are a number, e.g. three, of slidable tumblers g slotted at g' to engage a spindle e extending from the lever d. Notches g<2> in the slots are aligned by the insertion of the correct key x through a key hole in a washer j. Further pressure on the key causes the lever to tilt against its spring f withdrawing the locking end from the slot b<1> and causing the spindle e to enter the aligned notches g<2> The carrier is now free to be rotated by means of the key, the rotation being transmitted to the lock by a square section spindle h. A nose d<4> on the lever is adapted to enter a notch in the key in the unlocked position to prevent its being withdrawn until returned to the initial locked position. The tumblers are returned to their initial positions by a spring i acting through the spindle h.
