To all whom itmay concern.-
Be it known that I, SiMo GJUKIO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cameo, in the county of Mesa and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and usful Iniprovements in Doorlocks, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This lnvention relates to certaln new and useful improvements 1n door locks of the type embodying a knob operated latch bolt I forth, novel key operated devices requiring the use of a special type of key to operate the same and permit operation or sliding movement of the latchb'olt thru the medium 01 a knob spindle,
A still further object of the invention is to provide in. a door lock comprising in combination with a latch bolt capable of being locked in a projected position, a sliding lock bolt to be projected or retracted incident to the operation of the devices that control the movement of thelatchbolt.
With the above general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature oi the invention is better understood, the same consist-s oi the novel form, combination, and arrangementof parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

The door lock is associated with a door 1 that has its free swinging edge moving into abutting relations withthedoor frame 2 and the lock embodies a casing having a bottom wall 1, side walls 2 and 3, end walls 4 and 5 anda movable top wall 6 that is retained in sectional view showing the devices for controlling shding movement view of the outer face plate of the lock casposition by the screw 7 or other suitable iasten'ing devices. Thelock casing is set into an opening 8 formedin the door with the end wall 5 lying flush with the adjacent edge of the door 1 and having end extensions '9 that i are 'anchored to the door as shown in Figs.
1 and 2. A keeper plate 10 is similarly secured to the adjacent portion of the door frame and the end wall 3 of thelock casing and-keeper plate are provided with registeringopemngs 11 and 12 that torm communication between the interior of the lock casing and latch bolt and lock bolt sockets 13 and 14 respectively, formed in the door 7 frame 2.
A bifurcated lug 15 projecting perpendic ularly from the bottom wall 1 otthe casing constitutes a guidefor the shank of a latch bolt- 16, the forward end of the bolt 16 being provided with the usual tapering latch nose receive the adjacent threaded end of the latch bolt shank 16 and normally influenced in a direction toward the openings 11 by the coil spring 18 surrounding the latch bolt shank between the bifurcated lug 15 and the latch head 17. The rear end of the latch bolt shank is of frame construction and embodies side bars 19 and 20 connected by cross heads 21 and 22, the latter being of arcuate formation as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The latch bolt is reciprocated through the medium of a knob spindle and shackle carried thereby that is associated with the arcuate cross head 22 of the latch bolt frame, the reference numeral 23 designating a knob spindle extending through the bottom and top Walls 1 and 6 of the lock casing with a knob 24 upon each end thereof, the knob spindle 23 extending between the side bars 19 and 20 of the latch bolt frame and having a side extension lug 25 projecting between shoulders 26 formed on the double shackle 27 for locking the shackle thereto, the rear curved edge 27 a of the shackle engaging the curved cross head 22 as shown in Fig. 1. The knob spindle 23 rotatably projects through openings provided therefor in the door 1 and has associated therewith, inner and outer face plates 28 and 29 respectively that are secured asat 30 to the door. It will therefore be seen that when the knobs 24 are turned in either direction, the shackle 27 carried by the knob spindle will engage the curved cross head 22 as shown in Fig. 2 for retracting thelatch bolt against the tensionof the spring 18.
Devices are associated with the sliding latch bolt for holding the same in a projected locked position with the latch head 17 retained in the keeper socket l3 and include a bifurcated lug 31 projecting perpendicularly fro-m the bottom wall 1 of the casing and through which asliding latch member 32 extends for reciprocating movement at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the latch bolt: shank 16. The latch member 32 carries a head 33 that is adapted to be received in the socket 34 formed in the adjacent side of the frame bar 20 and is normally influenced in a direction toward said bar by the coil spring 35 surrounding the latch member 32 between the head 33 and bifurcated lug 31. The head 33 is guided in its movements by the spaced lugs 33 to prevent lateral movement of the head.
The operating means for the latch member 32 embodies a cylindrical block 36 rotatably supported in openings formed in the bottom and top walls 1 and 6 of the lock casing as shown in Fig. 8 with the inner end of the block extending into an opening 37 provided in the door 1 while a handle or finger piece 38 positioned outwardly of the face plate 28 is secured as at 39 to the adjacent end of the rotatable block 36 for rotating the same. An eccentric cam portion 40 is carried by the block 36 within the lock casing and is enclosed by a circular strap or band 41 that is pivotally connected as at 42 to the adjacent end of the latch member 32 outwardly of the bifurcated lug 31. The end of the block 36 supported in the top wall of the lock casing is provided with a circular recess 43 having a key receiving socket 44 in the bottom wall of the recess at one side thereof as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 8.
As shown more clearly in Figs. 8 to 10, the
face plate 29 carries a tubular bearing 45 extending into the opening 46 formed in' block 36, the barrel being retained in position by the ring orband 52 seated in an annular groove formed in the barrel, the band being split and having one of its spaced ends forming an outwardly extending lug 53 that projects into the groove 54 in one side of the tubular bearing 45. A set screw 55 threaded through the bearing enlargement 47 engages the band to prevent longitudinally shifting movement of the key receiving barrel. The barrel 50 is provided with a longitudinally extending key .receiv ing slot .56 and in order to place a key in the slot, it is necessary that the barrel be rotated to position the spaced ends of the band 52 out of registration with the slot and at which time the slot 56 registers with the key receiving socket in the adjacent end of the rotatable block 36. WVith the key so positioned, the barrel and block are simulta-, neously rotated and the eccentric cam 40 housed by the band 41 causes a lowering and laterally shifting movement of the band as indicated in Fig. 2 to retract the latch head 33 from the notch or socket 34 in the adja cent bar 20 of the latch bolt frame, and at which time, rotation of the knob spindle 23 shifting the shackle 27 retracts the sliding latch bolt 16. The block 36 is operated from the inner side of the door by the handle or finger piece 38 and is operable by a key from the outer side of the door. The latch member 32 may be retained in the retracted position shown in Fig. 2, when it is desired that the door remain in an unlocked condition.
The casing houses a lock bolt 57 that is slidably mounted in a guide 58, the nose of the lock bolt projecting through the casing opening 12 to be received in the keeper,
socket 14 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, there being a pivotal connection 59 between the inner end of the lock bolt 57 and the band 41. hen the latch member 32 is positioned for holding the latch bolt 16 in its locked position, the lock bolt 57 'is automatically shifted to its locked position atthe same time, the lock bolt being automatically retracted when the latch member 32 is shifted to a posit-ion to permit free operation of the latch bolt.
From the above detail description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, and while there is herein shown of key barrels having key receiving slots of different configurations requiring special keys for the manipulation of the lock machanism.
