Abstract

Melamine is prepared by progressively introducing cyanamide as a solid, melted, or in solution into a relatively large mass of liquid which does not react with cyanamide, dicyandiamide or melamine, maintained at 150-350 DEG C., the boiling-point of the liquid preferably being within this range. Suitable liquids are saturated higher aliphatic hydrocarbons, tributylamine, diethylaniline, cresol, diphenyl, esters or ethers of glycols and silicones, but preferably phenyl ether or tetraline. Examples relate to molten cyanamide introduced into propanol, crystalline cyanamide into butoxol, a solution of cyanamide in ethyl acetate into either propanol or a silicone and a solution of cyanamide in cresol introduced into cresol. The cyanamide is preferably prepared according to Specification 636,600. Specification 562,331 also is referred to.ALSO:Dicyandiamide or melamine is prepared by progressively introducing cyanamide either in the solid state, melted, or in solution, into a relatively large mass of liquid which does not react with cyanamide, dicyandiamide or melamine, maintained at a temperature of 80-130 DEG C. for dimerization or 150-350 DEG C. for trimerization, the boiling point of the liquid preferably being within these ranges. Suitable liquids for dimerization are those containing at least one OH group such as aliphatic alcohols, particularly propanol and butanol, whilst tributylamine, diethylaniline, phenyl ether, tetraline, cresol, diphenyl, higher saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, esters or ethers of glycols, and silicones may be used for trimerization. The cyanamide is preferably prepared in accordance with Specification 636,600. Specification 562,331, [Group IV], is referred to.
