Abstract
654,426. Separating achenes from pyrethrum flowers. POTTS, F. C. (Notcutt, L. A.). March 12, 1948, No. 7538. [Class 58] In a method of separating achenes and/or achenes plus florets from pyrethrum flowers the latter are subjected at substantially diametrically opposite regions of the peripheries to substantially radial inwardly directed pressure, the flowers at the same time being caused to rotate about their stem axes so that said pressure is applied successively at all points around the periphery. As shown, the flowers are fed via a shoot 22 into a machine comprising a rotatable disc 33 and a stationary surface 17, either or both of which may have . operative surfaces having a high coefficient of friction, in the form of shallow generally conical concavities, thus forming a clearance between them which is a maximum at the shaft and a minimum near or at the periphery. On rotating the disc 33, the flower between it and the stationary surface is subjected to peripheral pressure whilst rotating, the separated achenes and falling through a screen into a receptacle 28. The surface which may be provided with undulations may be mounted slightly out of accurate rectangularity to the shaft so that the clearance between them may be varied.
