Abstract

654,304. Compound sheet material. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Feb. 23, 1948, No. 5253. [Class 140] [Also in Groups II and XVI] Metal facings are formed on resinous materials by spraying metal on to a hard continuous form surface to form a porous layer, causing or permitting resinous material to harden whilst pressed into contact with the porous metallic layer and separating the metal-faced hardened resinous material from the form surface. Zinc may be sprayed, using an oxy-hydrogen gun, on to a stainless steel form 13 heated to 90-115‹ C., a felt 15 of asbestos fibre impregnated with a partiallypolymerised phenol-formaldehyde condensation product being then placed in contact with the zinc layer 14 and a layer 16 of cellular material, incorporating electric heating elements, in contact with the felt; the entire arrangement is then placed in a rubber bag, from which gases formed during the heating and curing are evacuated at 19; after curing, the metal-faced hardened felt is stripped from the steel surface. In a modification, the zinc coated steel form is painted with a partially polymerized polyester resin mixed with a solution of lauroyl peroxide in a resin monomer, glass fibre cloth impregnated with the same resin being laid in contact therewith and cured. A discontinuous metal layer may be formed by spraying the form through a stencil. Mirrors, radio aerial systems for aircraft and metal-faced moulds may be so produced.
