Abstract

654,296. Helicopters. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Sept. 13, 1946, No. 27549. Convention date, Oct. 31, 1945. [Class 4] In a helicopter the tilting member for controlling the rotor blade pitch is actuated by three screw jacks, of which two, 260, 260, are mounted respectively fore and aft of the rotor drive shaft, and the other, 262, is disposed on one side of the drive shaft, all the jacks being operated simultaneously for effecting collective pitch control, while the jacks 260 are operated differentially for fore-and-aft cyclic pitch control, and the jack 262 is operated for transverse cyclic pitch control. The collective pitch control lever 70 operates a sector 302 connected by a cable 304 to a chain engaging a sprocket 306 which drives a further chain 308 engaging sprockets 288 on all the jacks, which are thus operated simultaneously in the same direction upon movement of the control lever. Movement of the cyclic pitch control lever 68 in the fore-and-aft direction results in sprockets 294 on the jacks 260 being rotated in opposite directions by a chain 316 operated by a cable 312, while transverse movement of the lever results in movement of the sprocket 294 on the jack 262, through a cable 326 and chain 330. The rudder pedals 66 control the pitch of a torque-balancing rotor through a cable 300. Drag movements of the blades are damped by hydraulic dashpots, Fig. 2 (not shown). Specifications 641,076 and 651,139, [Group VIII], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also comprises the following subjectmatter : (a) Fig. 8a (Cancelled), which shows constructional details of the tail rotor blades, comprising leading edge spars 151 built of plywood and supporting solid ribs 153, the blade covering consisting of plywood 155. (b) In the arrangement shown in Fig. 17 (Cancelled), a nose landing-wheel 460 is provided to allow for nose-down landing, and a hoist 452 is mounted at the front of the fuselage to enable articles to be picked up while the aircraft is off the ground. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
