Abstract

654,159. Non-contact-making relays. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 12, 1947, No. 25061. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1945. [Class 40 (iv)] In an arrangement, Fig. 4, for detecting an electric potential falling within a specific narrow range, an A.C. source is connected to a discharge tube CC and a relay R through two static electrical switches A, B controlled by the potential vp under test. The switches shown are biassed rectifiers but may be thermistor trigger circuits, hot or cold cathode discharge tubes, hard tube trigger circuits or cathode-ray tubes. One switch A controls the discharge tube when the potential is higher than the specified range and the other B controls the tube when the potential is lower than the range. The output is effective to operate relay R either in the range in which the output characteristics of the two sections overlap or in a gap between the two characteristics. Fig. 5 shows output curves a, b characteristic of the two switches, vb being the voltage required to operate CC and c the combined output of the two sections. The width of the bend xy may be controlled by adjustment of bias potentials x+y, x - y applied to the mid-points of the secondary windings of the input transformer T<SP>1</SP>. By interchanging the bias connections of the two secondary windings, Fig. 13, the output characteristic shown in Fig. 12 is produced. The tube CC<SP>1</SP> is normally operated and is extinguished by a potential within the range. A second discharge tube CC<SP>2</SP> operates with relay R as CC<SP>1</SP> extinguishes. The two switches of Figs. 4, 13 may be separated, Figs. 3, 9 (not shown) the characteristics being as shown in Figs 5, 8. The circuit shown in Fig. 9 is the equivalent of a ring modulator by which it may be replaced. An earthed resistance W is provided in the arrangements of Figs. 4, 13 to prevent false operation when the test potential is disconnected.
