Abstract

<PICT:0654118/III/1> <PICT:0654118/III/2> <PICT:0654118/III/3> Metal articles such as vehicle bodies are cleaned, rust-proofed and prime coated by suspending the body at a level such that it may be partially submerged in treating liquids, rotating the body on a longitudinal axis intersecting the body whereby it is progressively coated, and simultaneously advancing the body lengthwise and tilting the body lengthwise as it enters and leaves each treating liquid. Referring to the drawings, a vehicle body 10 is suspended from and travels along "I" section rail 1 so curved in a vertical plane as to tilt the vehicle body into tanks 3 of treating liquid. A horizontal spindle 9 flanged at 9a, 9b and having brackets 33 attached to bumper strong points 34 passes through the dash bulkhead 10a and is supported on hooks 8 on arms 7 in the V-ends 6a of longitudinals 6 of boom 4 suspended from rail 1 by stirrups 14 and shank 13. Fins 11 on the longitudinals carry axle 15 supporting a large sprocket 16 and a small sprocket 17, rotation of either of which is transmitted via bevels 18 and 18a and shaft 19 to chain-wheel 20, chain 21 and wheel 22 fixed on shaft 9, thus rotating the body on a longitudinal axis. Racks 24 and 25 are arranged to operate sprockets 16 and 17 respectively when the body is towed along the rail, this rotating the body, the smaller sprocket being used when the body is in the bath and the larger otherwise.
