Abstract

653,837. Turning asbestos-cement &c. pipe ends. PASS & CO., Ltd., E., and COOKE, F. Oct. 25, 1947, Nos. 28551/47 and 7190/48. [Class 124] [Also in Group XXII] A tool for turning the outer periphery of pipe ends, particularly of asbestoscement, comprises a self-centring internalexpanding chuck having jaws 17 to engage and locate against the inner periphery and end of the pipe 18, means for expanding and contracting the chuck, a ring 22 rotatably mounted on the body 10 of the chuck. a tool-holder 29 mounted on the ring, means for rotating the ring, and separate means for advancing the tool for the cut. The body 10 comprises a disc mounted rotatably on a shaft 12 screw-threaded for engagement by a nut 15 to which the chuck jaws 17 are attached by links 16. The ring 22 is mounted rotatably on the body 10 in a groove provided by a two-part ring 19, 20. The tool-holder 29 is carried by a rod 28 slidable in a tubular housing 24 welded to the ring 22. Feed movement of the tool-holder is provided by a worm 27 mounted on the housing 24 and co-operating with a rack 32 on the rod 28. One end of the worm 27 is formed as a star-wheel 35 which is driven by contact with studs 36 provided by the two-part ring 19, 20 which is rotated by handles 23. After the jaws 17 have been positioned in the end of the pipe 18, the shaft 12 is turned in order to expand the jaws against the inner periphery of the pipe, a flange 18a on each jaw engaging the end of the pipe. A tool 37 in the holder 29 can be positioned for starting the cut by turning the worm spindle 26 with a key. To allow for use with a greater range of pipe diameters the tool-holder 29 can be provided with a shanked tool-extension. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, a tool housing 55 slides through a hole 56 in a rotatable ring 50 under the feed action of a shanked-nut 53 which engages the screwed shaft 52 of a tapered head 43 cooperating with the three segments of a chuck 40. A nut 46 is provided on the screw-threaded portion 45 of the shaft 52, and the ring 50 is rotatably mounted on this nut in a groove formed by means of a further nut 49. To position the device in the end of a pipe, the ring 50 is rotated by handles 51 after the ring and nut 46 have been locked together by means of a pin; the nut 46 then bears against the radial flanges 42 on the segments 40 and a head 43 expands the latter against the inner periphery of the pipe. After unlocking the connection between the ring 50 and nut 46 the ring is rotated to rotate and feed the tool 57.
