[Class 112] In a pile forming device in which a needle and a loop-retainer are mounted on relatively slidable handles, the needle or the loop-retainer is pivotally mounted at its upper end and loaded by a spring positioned below the pivot, and the pivotal movement of the needle or loop-retainer is limited in one direction by the loop-retainer or the needle respectively and in the other direction by a stop on its holder. As shown in Fig. 2 the loop-retainer b<SP>1</SP> is pivoted at i and the stop is constituted by an abutment h. The adjacent edges of the handles a, b have co-acting grooves and the handles are held together by a member e which also serves as a stop to limit the depth of pile. In a modification. Figs. 9 and 11, the needle a<SP>1</SP> is pivoted and the stop a<SP>6</SP> is adjustable. The loop retainer also comprises shears, and consists of a fixed blade b<SP>4</SP> and a pivoted blade b<SP>5</SP> moved by a roller b<SP>7</SP> co-operating with a cam slot in the handle a. Two handles are held together by an interlocking joint, and the depth of pile is limited by a stop pin n<SP>1</SP>.
