Abstract

653,574. Moulding patterned thermoplastic sheet material. STEVENS, A. H. (Boston Woven Hose & Rubber Co.). June 8, 1948, No. 15425. [Class 87 (ii)] A polished or ornamental surface finish is given to thermoplastic sheet material by passing it between two linearly movable cooperating pressure surfaces where it is subjected to the moulding action of flexible mould plates inserted between the material and one of the pressure surfaces. As shown, Fig. 1, the material 30 is led round a hollow rotating steamheated drum 10 under the pressure of a moving steel endless band 14. Flexible mould plates 50 are fed individually between the material and the drum to give the desired surface finish and, after moulding, are taken away on conveyer 40 to be cleaned. Segment 22 is heated to a high temperature, segment 24 to a lower temperature and segment 26 is cooled. Two or more flexible mould plates may be fed side-by-side to give different patterns on a single sheet. The sheet may have a fabric foundation 53.
