Abstract
653,450. Motor cycles and cycle frames. LOVELL, R. A. March 17, 1948, No. 7927. [Classes 79 (iii) and 136 (iii)] In a motor cycle the down or saddle tube of the frame is arranged immediately in front of the rear wheel and has fixed thereto engine rear mounting plates carrying the engine crank case so that the engine cylinder inclines forwardly and upwardly, the counter-shaft of the power transmission being mounted on the top of the plates so that it does not prevent the crank case being positioned adjacent the down tube. As shown the frame comprises a top inclined tube 1 and an extension fork member 1a which extend from the steering head tube 2 to the rear axle bracket 3 and there depends therefrom the down tube 4 to which are brazed tubular lugs 6. To the lugs 6 are connected the mounting plates 7 which have curved recesses at the front to receive the crankcase of the engine 8, the engine also being connected to the frame by front engine plates 7a so that the engine is substantially beneath the saddle. The top of the plates 7 are recessed to receive the countershaft 10 carrying the transmission clutch. The drive from the engine 8 to the rear wheel 5 is taken through chains 11, 12.
