Abstract

A smooth layer is provided on a rough surface inside a vessel by introducing successively a filling liquid to submerge the surface to be coated and on the surface of the filling liquid a solution of lower specific gravity than that of the filling liquid and containing an amount of material for the smooth layer greater than is required, tilting the vessel and decanting the liquid leaving a layer of solution on the rough surface which is then dried. The filling liquid may be water and the smooth layer nitrocellulose which may be dissolved in butyl acetate alone or mixed with xylene. A softening agent may be added to the solution. To provide a smooth layer on a luminescent screen which has been deposited in an electric discharge tube by settling from a filling liquid, the processes may be combined by using the same filling liquid for floating the solution. The vessels may be closed with stoppers preferably provided with inlet and outlet tubes, which may be removed. After drying, a metallic mirror layer or a luminescent layer may be applied to the smooth layer.
