Abstract
652,523. Rotary absorption dynamometers. HEENAN & FROUDE, Ltd., and WALKER, G. H. Nov. 25,1948,No. 30576. [Class 106 (ii)] A swinging carcase 1 of a rotary absorption dynamometer is provided with two arms 2, 3 for measuring torque in the loaded and overdrive or motoring condition respectively, the arms being connected to a self-indicating weighing means whereby the overdrive torque may be indicated immediately following a change-over from the loaded condition without resetting the weighing apparatus. In the loaded condition the arm 2 is connected by a link 5 to a first order lever 6 pivoted at 7, the link 5 bearing down on the pin 9 and raising the aggregation of weights 15 in the pan 14. In the motoring condition arm 3 is connected by a link 16 to a second order lever 17 pivoted at 19, the link 16 bearing upwards to raise weights 23 in the pan 22. A suitable amount of lost motion is provided by the slotted portions 10, 25 in the links 5, 16 co-operating with pins 9, 24 respectively to ensure that the appropriate lever 6 or 17 alone operates in the case of loaded and motoring conditions respectively. The separate scale pans 14 and 22 associated with each lever enable the appropriate number of weights to be placed in each pan to measure the torque existing under the two separate conditions. A spring-loaded dial indicator 18 is connected to both scale pans by means of a rod 11 and sliding bushes 11a, 11b so that the dial indicator 18 acts as a vernier for fine measurements of the particular torque being measured. By this means measurements of the torque existing immediately after a changeover from loaded to motoring condition may be measured without loss of time for adjustment to the changed torque value.
