Abstract

652,390. Valve relay circuits. CALVERT, R., SWALE, R. T., TOLE, C. R., and WAYNE KERR LABORATORIES, Ltd. Dec. 24, 1947, No. 34105. [Class 40 (vi)] In order to provide a variable accurate time interval between two events, such as the operation of two relays, a chain of frequency dividers feeds pulses at different repetition rates to counting circuits, a preselected number of one type of pulse being counted before pulses from a succeeding frequency divider are counted. Relay RLA operates, followed after the desired interval has elapsed by the operation of relay RLB. Pulses of repetition time 100, 10 and 1 m/s. are supplied from the frequency divider chain (not shown) to the grids of valves V1, V5 and V7. The first 100 m/s. pulse following the opening of switch S1 causes valve V1 to conduct and relay RL1 to operate and lock up, thus removing the short from valve V2. The next pulse causes valve V2 to conduct, relay RL2 operating to transfer charge from capacitor C1 to C2. This pulse also operates relay RL3 which locks up, thus allowing relay RLA to operate and commence the timing interval. Succeeding pulses operate relay RL2, the potential on the grid of valve V4 rising until the bias set by switch S2 is overcome, whereupon relay RL4 operates, locking up and removing the short on the grid of valve V5 to permit the 10 m/s. pulses to be effective. Relays RL5 and RL6 are operated by these pulses in a similar manner to the relays RL2 and RL4. When the desired number of 10 m/s. pulses have been counted, relay RL6 operates and locks up, commencing a timing period set by switch S4 which is calibrated in m/s. When a sufficient potential is available on the grid of valve V7, the next 1 m/s. pulse applied to the suppressor grid is effective to operate relay RL7 which locks up to permit relay RLB to operate and terminate the timing interval. The operation may be repeated by releasing the locked relays, closing switch S1 temporarily and discharging the capacitors by a relay operated by relay RLB. Relay RLB may cause a discharge lamp to operate to show the position of a mechanism set in movement by relay RLA.
