Abstract

652,238. Variable-speed drives for textile spinning &c. machines. PLATT BROS. & CO., Ltd., and TEAL, F. March 31, 1947, No. 3100. [Class 120(ii)] Speed regulating means for a spinning, twisting, or doubling machine comprising a component part of the headstock has associated means transmitting speed regulating motion to a driving unit located at the end of the machine remote from the headstock, to permit tree access to be obtained to the headstock gearing. The main operating spindle 37, Fig. 1, of the speed regulating means may have a pulley 48 fixed upon it, around which passes an endless flexible wire 49 extending to the opposite end of the machine to pass around a pulley 51 connected to a variable speed driving unit 52. Alternatively, other transmission devices may be employed, e.g. rack and pinion mechanism, a push-pull device, or hydraulic or electrical means. An electrical interlock may be provided to prevent the driving unit from being started unless the operating handle of the regulating means is in a low speed position. When the doors of the headstock are opened an electrical circuit may be broken to stop the machine, which cannot then be started again until the doors are closed. The speed regulating means includes three cams for controlling the speed during the build of the bobbins, a cyclic cam 10, Fig. 4, which makes one complete revolution during each individual rise and fall of the ring rail and is driven through a chain 11 from the cam shaft of the building mechanism of the machine, a basic cam 12, which makes a partial revolution during the complete lift of the ring rail and is driven through change gearing and a chain 13 from the take-up pulley of the building mechanism, and an auxiliary cam 14, which rotates with the basic cam 12 but is capable of adjustment relatively to it, so that the speed variation may be modified according to the state of completion of the bobbin bottom and also during the finishing period of the bobbin, the latter modification being secured by means of an adjustable tail-piece on the auxiliary cam 14. A lever 16 carries two follower rollers acted upon by cams 10, 14. A lever 15, Fig. 5, carries a follower roller acted upon by a cam 12. The levers 15, 16 are adjustably supported by rollers 17, 18, so that rotation of screws 24, 25 varies the magnitude of the motions imparted by the cams to the extreme ends of the levers, which support a pedal lever 31 that, in conjunction with a vertical rod 30, integrates the movements of the levers 15, 16 and transmits it to a three-armed lever 33 mounted by a link 35 to a cradle 36, freely rotatable on the main operating spindle 37. A sector unit 43 is also pivoted freely on the main operating spindle 37 and is adjustably connected to the cradle 36 by a stud 41a on a sliding member 41 carried by an adjusting screw 40 mounted on the cradle 36. A control handle 44, fast upon one end of the operating spindle 37, may be locked to the sector unit 43, in order that the integrated motion of the cams 10, 12, 14 may be transmitted to the spindle 37 and thence to the variable speed driving unit. The speed regulating means is contained in a housing located on the top of the headstock and is furnished with calibrated scales which afford visual indication of the setting positions of the adjustment points, while a pointer on the control handle indicates the speed of the machine at any instant. The speed regulating means may be applied to electrical or mechanical drives.
