Abstract

1,107,091. Tension control; signals; stopmotions; knitting machines. STOP MOTION DEVICES CORPORATION. 12 April, 1965 [13 April, 1964], No. 15430/65. Headings D1C; D1D and D1F. A device controlled by the tension in a yarn comprises movable and fixed arms forming a passage for the yarn, means for resisting movement of the movable arms including a spring- urged lever and means carrying a tension indicator adjustable along the lever for setting the limits of resistance offered by the arm, and signal means for indicating the limits so set. The yarn passes between fixed and movable arms 25, 19 respectively, Fig. 5. The movable arms are secured to a shaft 18 and carry a finger 28 to support the yarn should it become slack. When the yarn is in tensionit bears downwardly on the movable arms in opposition to (a) the effect of a counterweight 20 which may be adjustable (Fig. 8 not shown) and (b) the pressure exerted on a pivoted lever 38 by a spring 41 and by a member 46 adjustable along the lever. The lever is engaged by a roller 32 on an offset end of shaft 18 to which the movable arms are secured. To set the working tension, the member 46 can be moved along the lever 38 by rotating a knob 45, to a position indicated by a marker 15 in relation to a scale on the outside of a housing enclosing the parts. The member 46 bears on lever 38 by a spring-pressed ball, 54 Fig. 6, the upper end of the spring being engaged by an inclined surface 51, the left-hand end of the incline serving as a stop. When the tension reaches an extreme value, the shaft 18 is rotated to a position where the cranked end 33 engages one of two contacts 34, 35 as that a lamp 56 lights up and a stopmotion is actuated. The apparatus is carried on carrier 66 with a clamp 67, by which it is to be secured to a known stop-motion unit as used for example in a knitting machine.
