SPEED CONTROL DEVICE IN PARTICULAR FOR SPINNING FRAMES Filed MaICh 25, 1952 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR.
nite States SPEED CONTROL DEVICE 1N PARTICULAR FOR SPINNING FRAMES For operations in the course of which the speed of a machine or apparatus is to be varied simultaneously and automatically in dependence with different, mutually independent laws, speed control devices are known which control either directly the drive unit or a transmission member interposed between the drive unit and the machine. In spinning frames, such speed control devices are called regulators In the usual arrangements the motion of an integrating member, being subjected to the combined influences of members for controlling the base and layer speeds, is used to turn a shaft, which adjusts by means of rope pulleys and ropes the brush rockers of the commutator motor driving the spinning frame.
Thereby the speed of such motor is Varied.
To permit of the setting of the initial spinning speed on a spinning frame as desired in each case, such arrangements provide on the said shaft a coupling which at the same time permits of turning the shaft relative to the integrating member. Such coupling with the associated actuating means is a rather complicated mechanism, which adds to the cost.
This invention relates to an automatic speed control device in particular for spinning frames, which comprises a speed adjusting control member, two camwheels for automatically controlling the speed of a machine according to certain laws, means to rotate said camwheels, a rocker-lever type follower in engagement with each of said camwheels and adapted to receive motion therefrom, a pulling member associated with each follower and operatively connected to said control member, and means selectively to connect each pulling member to its associated follower in any of several positions determining different eifective lengths of said follower and thus determining diiferent ratios for the transmission of motion by said follower from its associated camwheel to its associated pulling member.
In the device according to the invention the aforementioned drawbacks of the known regulators are overcome thereby that the adjustment of a certain initial, e. g., initial spinning speed of the machine is enabled without any coupling provided between the integrating member and the rope pulley shaft, at least one of the pulling members being of variable length and both pulling members being connected by the integrating member, directly to the control member.
The speed control device according to the invention is compact and simple and, therefore, inexpensive in construction, and reliable in operation. In conjunction with a speed control gearing, preferably with a friction disk gearing as described, e. g., yin the U. S. Patent No. 2,222,281, a preferred embodiment of the invention may be provided which is greatly superior to the known combinations of regulators and commutator motors, particularly as regards cost. Moreover, in conjunction with a particularly small friction disk gearing this embodiment enables the incorporation of automatic control especially in older-type spinning mills with line shaft drive, where the lack of space and considerations relating to the consumption of energy and the arrangement of the drive atent means virtually preclude the use of the known control devices.
The invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fig. -l is a sectional View taken along the line I--I of Fig. 2 through an embodiment shown by way 'of example of a speed control device according to the invention, combined with a friction disk gearing.
Figs. 2 to 6 -show details of the invention,
Fig. 2being a section taken along line II-II of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 a section taken along line III-III of Fig. l,
Fig. 4 a section taken along line IV-IV of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 a section taken along line V-V of Fig. l, whereas Fig. 6 is a bottom plan view and a -section taken along line VI-VI of Fig. 4.
As `may be seen from Fig. 1, the casing 1 accommodates a friction disk .gearing 2, known per se, the transmission ratio of which may be varied steplessly by pivotally moving about three triangularly spaced stationary shafts 5 peripheral sets of friction disks 4, engaging a central set of friction disks 3. By a system of two links 7 connecting the two levers 6 for pivotally moving said sets of disks it is ensured that the pivotal movement of the peripheral sets of friction disks 4 takes place symmetrically with respect to the center. Power is transmitted from the central drive shaft 8 throughvthe central set of fricion disks 3, the peripheral friction disks 4, the gears 9 connected to the latter, and idlers 10 running on shafts 5, to a gear 11 on the driven shaft 12 coaxial with the driving shaft.
The casing 1 further accommodates the speed control device which is combined with the friction disk gearing torform a unit and is accessible by removal of the cover 13. With this unit it is possible to set, and to auto matically and steplessly control in the most simple manner the speed, e. g., of a spinning frame connected to the gearing. The cover 13 may be opened pivotally about the axis of a hinge 14 mounted to the casing.
As usual in spinning frames, the impulses for the base and layer speeds lare transmitted to the control device by means of flexible shafts. The rigid ends 15, 16 of said shafts (Figs. l and 2) are mounted in the casing and transmit rotation by means of worms V17, 18 and wormwheels 19, 20 to the camwheels 21, 22. The contours of the camwheels conform to speed curves desired during a bobbin cycle and `a ringe rail cycle, respectively.
The aperture 23 in the casing 1 -is closed by the cover 24, which has a cylindrical `extension 25 protruding into the casing and having bails 26 fixed to its flat portions by means of screws 27, which bails carry the bearings 28 for the shafts 15, 16 and the bearings 29 for the wormwheels 19, 20. The wormwheels 19 and 20 move independently of one another and have interposed between them a joint ball bearing 30. Their turned-off outer journals have splines 31, 32 for mounting the camwheelsV 2l, 22. Pivotally mounted on their outer surfaces the camwheels have slotted pawls 33, 34, which may be moved below headed screws 35, 36 at the end portions of the wormwheels to secure the camwheels against slipping ofIr the wormwheels. This facilitates at the same time the exchange of the camwheels.
The followers or rocker levers 40, 41 (Figs. l and 3) are pivotally movable about the pin 42 mounted in the casing and carry at their ends freely rotatable rollers 43, 44 rolling along the camwheels 21, 22 to determine different angular positions of the follower levers. As may be recognized from the lever 40 in Fig. 3, the follower levers are of box shape. The roller 43 rotates on ballfs and is held by a bolt 47 fitted in the parallel side walls '45 of the lever.
arenoso 3 The follower levers are engaged by pulling members to transmit the motion of the followers to the control member of the gearing. In the embodiment shown the pulling members consist of roller link chains 48, 49, but ropes or other flexible elements, or rigid elements,
such as rods or the like, may also be used. As usual each pulling member engages by means of a keeper pinv 50, 51 any one of the numerous notches S2, 53 provided in the upper end faces of the lever walls 45, 46. The effective length of the follower levers may be varied as required by the selection of corresponding notches.
Since, in accordance with the invention, the pulling members are of variable length, the last link of each chain has riveted thereto a threaded spindle S4 or 55, on which a knob 56 or 57, provided with a female thread, is adjustable. Each of said knobs engages with a T-shaped carrier 5S or 59 through which the chain 48 or 49, and the spindle 54 or 55, pass freely and which contains keeper pins 50 or 51 on both sides of the spindle in the arms 60 or 61 of its ange, Two further knobs 62, 63 serve as lock nuts to secure the carrier in its adjusted position. Wings 64 or 65 protrude from the ilange of the carrier for the keeper pins and are slidingly guided at the inside surfaces of the walls 45 or 46. This precludes any pivotal movement of the keeper pins relative to the followers and ensures a safe engagement in the notches.
Moreover, to eliminate the tendency, particularly of flexible pulling members, to follow an adjustment of the knobs, the lower ends 66, 67 of the threaded spindles, which ends are riveted to the chains, are of U shape. The lateral guide faces of said ends have countersurfaces at the rocker levers or, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, at the wings 64, 65 of the carrier-s for the keeper pins.
To set the gearing for a certain initial speed, e. g., initial spinning speed, it is suticient to make at least one of the two pulling members of variable length. In this case the keeper pins of the other pulling member may be firmly connected to the same, as usual.
The lower ends of each of the chains 4S, 49 pass round sprocket wheels 68, 69 and are riveted to a correspondingly formed portion thereof. The two sprocket wheels are pinned on a common shaft '70 to rotate as a unit therewith and are spaced apart a distance equal to the chains and rocker lever spacing. The sprockets and the shaft 70 aixed thereto thus act like a two-armed crank and constitute dual means to integrate motion imparted to the pulling members 43, 49 by the cams 21, 22 and their follower levers 40, 41. The shaft 70 is rotatable in ball bearings 71, 72 of the speed adjusting lever 73 (Fig. 5). This adjusting lever is pivotally movable on one of the stationary shafts 5 of the friction wheel gearing and, carrying one of the peripheral sets of friction disks 4, is connected through links 7 to the levers 6 for pivotally moving the other peripheral sets of friction disks. As a result of this arrangement the motions imparted to the rocker levers 40, 41 by the camwheels 21, 22 are integrated automatically.
To prevent the keeper pins 50, 51 from falling out of the notches 52, 53 of the follower levers, and, where flexible pulling members are used, to maintain the latter in a tense condition all the time, tension devices, such as springs, must be provided. They may be omitted, however, if, in accordance with the invention, the pulling members 48, 49 are linked to the adjusting lever '73 of the friction wheel gearing by means of the shaft 70 of the sprocket wheels 68, 69 so as to oppose the turning moment exercised by the gearing on the adjusting lever, the pulling members being subjected to tension under all conditions of operation of the gearing.
To supervise the setting of the desired speed of the machine, an indicating device is provided, which is separated from the control device by a guard 74 cranked to extend into the casing l. This guardhas a graduated scale provided below a pointer 75 rotatable with one of the shafts 5 of the gearing. The indication may bc observed from the outside through a sight glass '76, which is fixed by means of a frame 78 and screws 79 to the casing, with a packing 7'7 interposed.
The invention is not restricted to the embodiment shown nor by the terms used in describing the same. Within the scope of the claims it covers also other embodiments of speed controls of the type described, lincluding controls following only a single law for the speed curve of the machine. This may be accomplished, e. g., in that one of the rocker levers does not rock because it is associated with a circular disk (camwheel). Finally, one of the rocker levers as well as its associated pulling means may be eliminated altogether.
