Abstract
651,524. Balling guns. MATHER, R., (trading as MINERVA LABORATORIES). March 11, 1948, No. 7491. [Class 81(ii)] In a balling gun for administering medicinal tablets to animals wherein a plunger slides within a barrel the plunger is given, by means of an operating handle, a stepby-step movement in order to eject, one by one, a plurality of tablets previously inserted in the barrel. As shown, the gun handle 16 and cylindrical plunger housing 17 is formed by right- and-left hand units 12, 13, having flat meeting faces which lie in a diametrical plane of the barrel 10 the units being clamped together by nuts and bolts 26, 24, the clamping also securing the barrel 10 which at its inner end abuts the flange 18 formed within the cylinder 17. The plunger 14, slidably mounted in the bearing bush 23, formed by the units at the end of the housing 17, and with its head sliding in the barrel 10 has a stem 28 of channel shape in cross-section notched at regular intervals as at 31. These notches are successively engaged by a spring controlled pawl 41 carried by one arm of the operating handle 15, which, in the shape of a bell-crank lever, is pivoted at 33. The other arm 36 extends into the handle 16 being connected to tension spring 37. The pawl 41 slides in a slot 32 formed by spacing apart the units 12, 13 between the flange 18 and end 21 of the housing 17 and in the position shown is held free of the plunger by co-operating surfaces 43, 44, on the pawl and housing respectively. To load the gun, tablets 47 are fed into the barrel from the muzzle end until the latter is full and by repeatedly moving the operating handle 15 smartly towards the handle 16 the tablets are ejected one by one. A rubber sleeve 45 is stretched over the muzzle end and by lightly gripping any tablet which lies within the reduced portion prevents it falling out if the barrel is inclined downwardly.
