[Classes 21, 66 and 125(iii)] Means for sealing a closure member of a container having a neck receiving the closure member. comprises an out-turned flange at the outer end of the neck, a groove in the flange extending downwardly relative to the plane of the neck, the two sides of which groove are sloped, at least over a portion of their length, as seen in cross-section, towards or away from the axis of the neck, and a continuous sealing ring having a portion shaped to overlie the closure member and having an axial flange adapted to be engaged with said groove and to be distorted by having been pressed axially into the groove. As shown, Fig .14, the lever lid 45 of a drum is sealed in position in the neck 40 by a sealing ring 47 which is pressed down until the flange 49 is deformed within a groove formed between the walls 42, 43, the bottom of the groove lying close to rack 40 so as to receive support therefrom during the pressing operation. The groove may also receive a complete or part ring 115 formed with a spout 116 to facilitate pouring of the liquid contents; where the neck is not coaxial with the drum, the ring can be rotated so that the spout overlies the drum when not in use. In alternative constructions, the groove may slope outwardly instead of inwardly. In the case of a bottle or jar, Fig. 6, a groove is formed in the end surface 67 or, as shown, in the outer surface 65 of flange 63 on the neck wall 62. The axial flange 71 of the sealing ring, Fig. 10, may be plain or, as shown, notched. A weakening notch 74 is also provided opposite a slit 77 in the flange so that the sealing ring can be broken by lifting a tab 72. According to the provisional Specification the sealing ring may engage a series of recesses in the flange, instead of a groove. Specifications 480,319, 480,338 and 657,022 are referred to.
