Abstract

651,127. Snap-action switches ; contactmembers for switches. HOOVER, Ltd., and HAYDON, E. K. Dec. 16, 1948, No. 32576. [Class 38(v)] In a snap-action switch including a boxlike casing 10 containing fixed contacts 14 in at least two corners and a moving contact 23 carried by a rocking, U-shaped bail 20 having trunnions 21 projecting into seatings 22 in the upper edges of opposite sides of the casing, the bail being operated by a dolly 40 carried by the cover of the casing, through a spring strut 43 extending from the end of the dolly to the base of the bail,- the moving contact is mechanically connected to the bail by a moulded insulating block 25 having grooves 27, 29 in opposite faces to receive the moving contact and side of the bail respectively. Contact 23 conveniently comprises two strips of inverted W-shape riveted together at 26 and straddling a guide track 17 of insulating material located in the casing. Groove 27 is V-shaped to receive the centre of contact 23 and groove 29 extends into a hole 30 to receive the trunnion 21 on the adjacent side of the bail. In the embodiment shown the switch is actuated by a push-button 47, successive downward movements of which shift the dolly alternately in opposite directions by means of a strut 48. Alternatively the dolly may be directly operated when the invention is applied to a tumbler switch. Conversion to a twoway or double-pole switch may be effected by providing contacts 14 in all four corners of the casing and an additional contact 23, block 25 and track 17 on the opposite side of the bail.
