Abstract
651,097. Moulding corrugated rubber hose. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., GOULDING, G. H., and WILSON, H. Oct. 30, 1948, No. 28196. [Class 87 (ii)] Into a tube of heat-vulcanizable rubber composition which is to be corrugated is inserted a hollow former having an externallycorrugated surface perforated in the grooves thereof, and whilst the interior of the former is maintained at a pressure less than that outside the tube a fluid heating medium at vulcanizing temperature is applied to the outside of the tube, whereby the tube is pressed against the former and vulcanized. One method is illustrated in the Figures, which show a former 3 having a bore 2 fitted at one end with a threaded connector 6. Holes 5 lead from the trough of each corrugation to the bore. A tube 12 of partly-vulcanized rubber composition is slipped over the former, clamps 13 are applied to make an airtight seal between tube and former at each end, the connector is screwed into an opening 11 in the cover 10 of an autoclave, the cover is bolted in position, and steam under pressure is admitted to the autoclave. In another method the tube is mounted on the former as described above, the inside of the former is connected to a vacuum line to partly evacuate the former and line to cause the tube to assume the shape of the former, and the former plus tube is immersed in hot water to effect vulcanization. The corrugated tube may then be blown off the former by means of compressed air. Partial evacuation may also be used when the rubber is to be vulcanized by other heating media at atmospheric pressure or above, e.g. steam.
