Abstract
650,216. Bonding rubber to steel. SANDVIKENS JERNVERKS AKTIEBOLAG. Dec. 21, 1948, No. 32970. Convention date, Jan. 7. [Class 70] [Also in Group VIII] Rubber-coated steel is continuously produced by conveying a preheated steel strip and a rubber strip coated with a thermosetting resin along converging paths and then providing sufficient pressure in conjunction with that produced by a dielectric field to cure the rubber and set the cement between the strips. In a preferred apparatus a steel strip 1, which may be copper plated, passes between the nozzles 4 of sandblasters 6 and then through a heater coil 20. At the same time rubber strips 8 and 10 pass the applicators 24 of spray or brushing devices 26 which apply a coating of a thermosetting cement, the setting temperature of which is substantially the same as the curing temperature of the rubber stock. The three strips then run together over guide rollers 28 and 30 where they are subjected to high-frequency oscillations from electrodes 32 and 40 respectively. Finally, the rubber-coated steel passes between pressure rollers 50 and 52 which may be heated by radiation, e.g. by infra-red rays, which completes the bonding and curing of the rubber.
