Abstract
650,096. Pliers. AIRCRAFT-MARINE PRODUCTS. Inc. June 27, 1947, Nos. 16991 and 16992. Convention dates, June 27, 1946 and Dec. 23, 1946. [Class 61(ii)] [Also in Groups XXII and XXXVII] A terminal connector blanked and bent up from sheet metal and comprising a connector portion 24, Fig. 2, joined to a ferrule portion 26 having tapered lateral ears 28, 30. 34 is crimped on to a cable by dies 46, 48. Fig. 7, after preforming the ferrule to a U-shape, said dies forming the jaws of a pliers hand tool or being mounted in a standard press. Die 46 comprises three plates 50, 52, 54 channelled at 56, 58, 82 respectively, Fig. 9, the channels terminating in rounded faces 60, 62, 80 which receive the ears 28, 34, 30 respectively when a connector with a cable inserted in the ferrule portion is placed in the rounded face 84 of die 48 and the dies are closed. The cable may be insulated or stripped. Fig. 14 shows the dies completelyclosed on a connector placed on an insulated stranded conductor, the die faces 60, 62 having curled the ears 28, 34 round and forced them through the cable insulation 42 into contact with the core 44, and the die face 80 having curled the ear 30 round the cable insulation thereby serving as a support. Die plate 54 may be shaped similarly to the plates 50, 52 so that the ear 30 also penetrates the insulation 42. Where the cable core is solid, the ears are wrapped thereabout. Fig. 21 shows a modification wherein the ferrule portion 103 comprises opposed ears 103b, 103c bent or rolled to form a cylinder. In this case the connector is crimped on to a stripped stranded conductor by dies 108, 110, the former having a rounded face 109 in which the base of the ferrule rests and the latter having a recess with flat side walls 111 terminating in rounded faces 112 which meet in an edge 113. When the dies are closed, the edge 113 forces the meeting edges of the ears down on to the strands of the conductor as shown in Fig. 19. The ears may have slanting edges so that when rolled up they meet in a diagonal joint, the die edge 113 also being skewed. Thus when the connector is crimped on to the wire, the edges of the ears are parallel to the strands, Fig. 27. Other alternative forms of connector are also described for use with the above dies (see Group XXXVI). Specification 613,013, [Group XXXVI], is referred to.
