Abstract

649.880. Sliding doors. KING, Ltd., G. W., and BURROWS, A. T. C. Sept. 29, 1948, No. 25379. [Class 20(iii)] A sliding door which moves back and forth in a predetermined path into open and closed positions has means to impart a vertical movement to the door subsequent to its arrival in the closed position and a reverse vertical movement prior to its movement therefrom, and such vertical movement is utilized to effect operation of pivoted latch or hook members 24, 25 disposed at two opposed lateral edges of the door and adapted to co-operate with fixed brackets 27 at either side of the door opening according to the direction of the vertical movement so as to move the door inwardly against or outwardly from sealing means 28 around the opening. The door 10 is suspended from two trolleys 11, one or both of which may be driven, moveable on track 12. The lifting unit comprises a motor 13 coupled to a threaded rod 14 rotatably journalled in the door structure on a vertical or substantially vertical axis, and a threaded member 15 on the rod 14 normally restrained against rotation, and moved vertically when the rod rotates. Cables 16 on the member 15 pass around pulleys 17 .freely mounted on the door, and then around sheaves 18 on trolleys 11, and the ends are adjustably coupled together by a turnbuckle 19. Pulleys 17 are equally spaced from the centre, and when the member 15 is moved by rotation of rod 14 the door is moved vertically accordingly. The motor 13 is operated automatically to raise or lower the door at the closed position. A rod 23 disposed adjacent and parallel to each lateral edge of the door has a plurality of spaced hook elements 24 and is connected to the door by links 25. The bars 23 are slightly offset with respect to each other, and preferably have rollers 26 at the lower end, and do not move vertically with the door. The hooks 24 engage in the brackets 27 on the door opening as the door moves to closed position. As the door is moved vertically it will, by the action of links 25, move inwardly or outwardly and co-operate with sealing elements 28.
