Abstract

649,861. Washing dishes. CARLSTEDT, S. B. F. Aug. 24, 1948, No. 22277. [Class 138(i)] A dishwashing machine, Fig. 2, has an upper part 1 for receiving the articles to be washed, a lower part 2 communicating with the upper part, an inlet 21. Fig. 3, for washing liquid connected to the lower part, a shaft 6 in the lower part carrying impelling members 7 such as shovels, to circulate the liquid from the lower to the upper part, an electric motor for rotating the shaft and of a type wherein its speed varies in accordance with the load on the impelling members and consequently with the amount of liquid in the lower part and control means such as a valve 23, Fig. 3, in the liquid inlet to keep the, latter closed, e.g. by a spring 24, when the machine is at rest but to open it by centrifugal force when the motor is brought into operation, the control means being adapted gradually to close the inlet as liquid is supplied to the lower part and consequently the speed of the motor is reduced, until the inlet is closed when a predetermined liquid level in the lower part is reached. The liquid supply is connected at 17, Fig. 3, to the lower part 2, and communicates with a central channel 16 formed in the shaft 6. 'The channel 16 communicates with the interior of a counter-balance housing 8<SP>1</SP> for the shovel 7, through a radial hole 21. The hole 21 is normally closed by a valve 23 'which may be formed integral with a centrifugal body 25 slidable in the housing 8<SP>1</SP> against the action of the spring 24 adjustable by a cap 26. The interior of the housing 8<SP>1</SP> communicates with the lower part 2 through a hole 22 in the wall of the housing. When the series electric motor is started it runs at high speed since there is no liquid in the lower part 2. The valve 23 opens the hole 21 by centrifugal force on the body 25. The liquid entering the lower part 2 offers resistance to the shovels 7 and consequently the speed of the motor falls and the valve 23 gradually closes and is finally closed when the speed of the motor is such that the centrifugal force on the body 25 is overcome by the spring 24. Clearly the level of liquid in the lower part 2 may be predetermined. The level of the liquid in the lower part 2 may be adjusted to a lower position by means of a resistance which can be switched in the motor circuit so that the speed of the motor falls more rapidly. The channel 16 may extend through the shaft 6 so as to communicate with the counterbalance housings 8, Fig. 2.
