Abstract
<PICT:0649764/III/1> <PICT:0649764/III/2> In a portable apparatus for continuous gas analysis the use of liquids is avoided and constituents of the gas are removed by solid absorbents. The velocities of the gas current before and after absorption are measured by " Rotameters " (Registered Trade Mark), which comprise indicator bodies D, G, K, Fig. 1, suspended by the upwardly-flowing gas current. Alternatively the pressure of the gas before and after absorption may be measured by any instruments not containing liquid, e.g. the aneroid devices 33 shown in Fig. 6. One or more constituents may be successively measured by absorption and further constituents may be determined by their heat of combustion using, for example, the device of Specification 402,011. The passage of gas through the apparatus may be effected by a pressure pump A, b, Fig. 1, or a suction pump P, Fig. 6. As shown in Fig. 1, the gas is dried by calcium chloride B and carbon dioxide and oxygen are successively removed by means of solid potassium hydroxide E and white phosphorus H, the volumes absorbed being determined by means of " Rotameters " C, F, I. By means of an injector N air is drawn in through valve M and the combustion of carbon monoxide is effected by means of a hopcalite catalyst X, the rise in temperature of which is measured by differential thermometer P. If in addition hydrogen is to be determined, a second catalyst tube (not shown) heated to 100-360 DEG C. and containing hopcalite or cobaltic oxide is attached. Instead of admitting air, oxygen may be supplied by passing the gas successively through vessels containing respectively a slightly volatile acid (either solid or absorbed in a solid), a substance such as a peroxide which evolves oxygen on contact with acid, and a drying agent.
