Abstract

649,149. Joint-making packing. CAILLAS, J. March 30, 1948, No. 9012. Convention date, March 18. [Class 122(iii)] (Also in Groups VIII and XXII] Laminated plastic metallic strips for making heat-engine gaskets and the like are made by cooling a strip of metal foil while applying natural or synthetic resin base adhesive between successive turns, cutting the coil so formed and unrolling it flat. The foil is fed from a reel 6 on to an anti-clockwise rotating cylinder 3 over a reversely flexing roller 15 and under an adjustable spring-loaded roller 31. A rubber-lined spreader roll 19 for the adhesive is mounted on a pivoted bath 16 and maintained in contact with the coil by a spring 25. After the requisite number of turns an automatic revolution-counter (not shown) rotates a cam 23 which tilts the bath and moves the roll 19 away from the work. The cylinder 3 continues to rotate until the portion to which the adhesive has been applied is covered and the coil so formed is then removed by cutting along a slot 30 in the cylinder 3. The adhesive is preferably phenol - phthalein resin commercially known as " Glycophene N.V.S." dissolved in an equal amount by weight of trichloroethylene.
