Abstract

648,564. Moistening charge. BURTON, H. F., and CLARK, N. LEITH-HAY-. Sept. 28, 1948, No. 25289. [Class 7(ii)] In a device for supplying moistened air to the induction pipe, comprising a water container 11 with air inlets 42 above the water level and an outlet pipe 18 for the moistened air, the ends 47 of the air inlets 42 being formed as nozzles facing the same direction and tangential to a circle about the axis of the chamber to cause circulation of the air above the water surface, the air inlet orifices 43 are separately adjusted by screwed members 44. A shoulder 17 indicates the correct filling level and the chamber 11 may be formed of aluminium or synthetic resin, the air inlets 42 being carried either in the cover 16 or the walls of the chamber. The orifices 43 are preferably arranged so that the total air inlet area is less than the area of the outlet orifices 27 in pipe 18 to produce a vacuum in the chamber 11. In a modification, Fig. 5, an orifice 51 covered by a flexible flap 52 indicates the correct filling level, the flap being held closed by suction when the engine is running. The air entering the device may be heated and the container 11 may be surrounded by a heating muff. Specification 557,676 is referred to.
