Abstract

648,495. Clocks. COPE, W. W. Aug. 13, 1948, No. 21355. [Class 139] In a clock the striking and chiming mechanisms are driven by separate electric motors. When one of the pins 10, Fig. 1, on a disc 11 rotated from the time train at one revolution per hour raises a rocker 9 a pivoted bell-crank lever 8 is rocked clockwise and a link 5 attached thereto is moved to the right until a pin 13 thereon leaves the top of a tumbler 14 whereupon the link 5 falls and a notch 6 therein engages a pin 7 on the upper arm of a pivoted two-armed lever 4. When the pin 10 passes the rocker 9 a spring 12 pulls the link 5 to the left and the lever 4 is rocked counter-clockwise so that its lower arm depresses a plunger 3 and closes a switch 2 to start a motor 1 which drives the chiming train. The tumbler 14 is pivoted on a T- shaped lever 15 the stem of which carries a pin 17 which co-operates with the usual count wheel 18 in such a way that at the end of the " chime" the lever 15 and tumbler 14 are rocked to move the link 5 and release the pin 7 from the notch 6 thus opening the switch 2 and stopping the motor 1. Just before the hour a pin 30 on the count wheel 18 rocks a three-armed lever 27 counter-clockwise to release the rack hook 24, free the rack 21 and at the same time move a link 31 to the left until a notch 32 therein engages a pin 33 on the upper arm of a pivoted two-armed lever 34. When, on the hour, the lever 27 is freed by the pin 30 the spring rocks it clockwise and the link 31 in moving to the right rocks the lever 34 clockwise to depress a plunger 3 and actuate a switch 35 to start a motor 36 which drives the striking train. The rack 21 is gathered in the usual manner and on the return movement of the rack hook 24 the lever 31 frees the lever 34, the switch 35 is opened and the motor 36 stops. A cam 42 is secured to the count wheel 18 and co-operates with a lever arm 41 attached to the lever 4 in such a way that at the hour the link 5 is required to make an additional movement to the right to engage the notch 6 with the pin 7. This additional movement is obtained by placing the corresponding pin 10 nearer the circumference of the disc 11 than the other pins 10. The chiming mechanism will therefore always be brought into its true phase relationship with the timing train at the hour. This could also be effected in the usual way by making the count wheel notch 20, which the pin 17 enters after chiming " threequarters," deeper than the others.
