Abstract

648,040. Cycle brakes. CLARKE, C. A. Nov. 11, 1948, No. 29298. [Class 136 (i)] A cycle brake of the calliper type is operated by means of a wedge member g disposed between two swivelling blades h<SP>2</SP> integral with the pivoted brake levers h, floating rollers I being inserted between the sides g<SP>1</SP> of the wedge member and the adjacent edges h<SP>3</SP> of the swivelling blades so that upon advance of the wedge member the floating rollers are displaced in the direction of said advance but at a slower rate of travel. The brake levers h are pivotally mounted on studs i secured in curved arms a<SP>1</SP> of a back plate a and are pressed apart by a coiled spring j, the blades h<SP>2</SP> thus being pressed towards one another. The rollers l are fitted on pins l<SP>1</SP> connected together by a coiled tension spring l<SP>2</SP>. Washers l<SP>3</SP> are fitted over the pins so as to overlap the blades h<SP>2</SP> and wedge g and maintain the rollers in place during the travel of the wedge member. The edges h<SP>3</SP> of the blades converge towards the tapered sides of the wedge in the normal position but become parallel and eventually reverse the relative inclination as the blades swivel upon the pivots so that the velocity ratio of the mechanism gradually increases as the brake is applied. Stops g<SP>2</SP> are provided on the wedge member g to limit the travel of the rollers l. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6, a member n is provided formed as two wedges. Swivelling blades o have slots o<SP>1</SP> into which are fitted duplex rollers having heads p and a middle portion p<SP>1</SP> of smaller diameter engaging in the slot o<SP>1</SP>. Openings o<SP>2</SP> lead into the slots and admit the portions p<SP>1</SP> of the rollers.
