[Class 138 (ii)] In a washing machine having a completely submerged, continuously rotatable, disc-like, horizontally mounted impeller 18 in or adjacent to one side wall 12 of a container, the container has a generally rectangular form with substantially vertical end and side walls 11, 12, an approximately horizontal flat bottom wall 13 and a flat sloping wall 19 between one or each end wall 11 and the bottom wall 18 arranged parallel to the impeller axis so that a bottom corner of the container is cut-off by each wall 19. The container is made of three sheet metal stampings, one of generally U- shape to form the bottom and end walls 13, 11, the other two having rounded ends forming the sides 12. Integral flanges 14, 14<SP>1</SP> are welded and soldered to join the pieces. The bottom 13 is integral with the wall 19 which slopes at approximately 45 degrees. The impeller 18 is mounted in a recess 17 in one of the walls 12 and is rotated so that the lower part moves away from the face 19. The bottom wall 13 slopes gently and a drain opening 20 is provided at the lowest point where it joins the wall 19. A flexible pipe 23 is joined by an elbow 22 to the opening 20, the other end of the pipe being normally supported above the water level by a clip 24. The top of the container is a channel section frame 15 fitting over the pressings. A bracket 25 on which a wringer may be mounted is bolted to the sides 12 close to the top to stiffen the container. Stand mounting lugs 26 are provided on the underside of the bottom wall 13. The sloping wall 19 may have longitudinal or oblique ribs and may be in the form of a corner piece inserted in a rectangular container. The other bottom corner may similarly slope.
