[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Groups XI and XXIX] An electrode type water boiler which avoids heavy loading of the power supply at the moment of switching on comprises movable insulating shields 7, 7a between pairs of electrodes 4, 6; 4a, 6a, the shields dropping between the electrodes due to heavy plate 8 when the power supply is off, and being raised to a predetermined exposing position by hydraulic means when the power supply is switched on. Upon closing manual breakers 19 and with the water temperature such that the thermostatic switch 17 operates, the contactor 18 makes, causing power supply to the electrodes, magnetic valve 14 and pump 25 to be switched on. Valve 14 is thus closed and the pump causes piston 10 and hence the shields 7, 7a to rise. Rheostat 22 shunted across the relay 21 operating winding varies the relay sensitivity to loads in the power supply and hence loads at which pump motor cut-off relay 23 operates. When contactor 18 opens due to operation of the thermostat 17 or breaker 19, the valve 14 opens, allowing liquid beneath the piston 10 to flow into reservoir 13 and the shields 7, 7a to drop.
