Abstract
Vanadium and phosphorus are extracted from mixed salts, which separate during the preparation of alumina, e.g. from bauxite, by the alkaline method, by treating with an acid until the pH is 7.5-8.5 when disodium phosphate is separated on cooling and vanadium is separated from the mother liquor. Thus the mixed salts are washed and suspended, in wash water obtained subsequently, to form a viscous paste, which is steam heated to 30-40 DEG C. and treated with sulphuric acid until the pH is 8. Disodium phosphate is crystallized from the resulting solution, after filtering at above 35 DEG C., by cooling to 10 DEG C. The crystals are centrifuged, filtered and washed, these washings being used for dissolving further mixed salts. The mother liquor is, either treated with ammonium chloride until the pH is 7 when ammonium metavanadate is precipitated which may be roasted to vanadium pentoxide, or subjected to hydrolysis to obtain vanadium pentoxide. It is stated in the Specification to be known to neutralize the mixed salts with sulphuric acid to pH about 3 in the presence of oxidizing agents such as permanganate, oxygenated water, or peroxides to obtain vanadium pentoxide by hydrolysis, or to treat saturated solutions of the salts with ammonium chloride to precipitate ammonium vanadate.
