Abstract
An alkyldihalosilane of the general formula <FORM:0647530/IV (b)/1> wherein R represents an alkyl radical containing more than 12 carbon atoms and X represents a halogen atom, is prepared by reacting an alkyl magnesium halide having more than 12 carbon atoms with its molecular equivalent or more of a trihalosilane in the presence of an ether. The product may be separated from the reaction product by fractional distillation. The reaction may be carried out at below room temperature during the addition of the Grignard reagent. Alkyl magnesium chlorides or bromides may be used, while those containing from 14 to 20 carbon atoms are preferred. Specific alkyl groups mentioned are the tetradecyl, hexadecyl, stearyl, eicosyl and myricyl groups. Trichloro-, trifluoro- and tribromo-silanes are mentioned as suitable trihalosilanes.
