Abstract

647,424. Molding dough. JESSON, L. E., and JESSON, G. A. Feb. 20, 1948, No. 5083. [Class 87 (ii)] A dough piece D is sheeted between a roller 14 and the upper run 2a of an endless belt 2, the sheet is coiled by a device 15, and the coil is rolled between the belt run 2a and the lower run 1a of an endless belt 1. The belts run between a frame comprising side-plates 3, 4. The coiling device is pivoted at the end remote from the dough-entry end on a shaft 21 carried by cranks 22 which are adjustable to vary the height of the discharge end of the coiling device. The device may be mesh-like, but, as shown, is grid-like, comprising longitudinal metal rods 16 and transverse metal rods 17 welded together; its dough-engaging end is supported in its lowermost position by a post 20 secured to a bar 19 which rests on the frame, the arrangement allowing the device to rise as the coil grows. The dough-engaging end is flared. The roller 14 has a concave peripheral surface and its shaft 24 is mounted in slots 34 in the frame. The roller may be adjusted vertically by rocking an arm 31 pivoted on an axle 32 and having an eccentric pin 29 engaging a slot 28 in one of a pair of arms 26 which carry the roller shaft 24 and are pivoted at 27. The handle 31 is fixed in position by nut-and-spring means 33. A convex knife 23 which scrapes the roller 14 is fixed to the arms 26 and hence moves with the roller as a unit. The belt 1 passes around rollers 43, 44 having spindles 41, 42 mounted in spaced bars 45, 46. The spindle 41 is journalled in the frame and the belt assembly pivots clockwise about this spindle as the coiled dough passes thereunder and raises it. Means are provided for reducing the load exerted by the belt assembly on the dough during the first part of the travel of the dough between the belts 1, 2, and increasing the load for the remainder of the travel. Such means includes a weight (not shown) attached to a chain, rope, &c. 52 passing over a sprocket 53 and attached to an arm 49 fulcrummed at 50. The arm 49 carries a hook 51 which engages a rod 47 fixed to bars 45, 46 and initially resting in slots 48 in the frame. At first the chain tends to pull the arm upwardly, thus taking some weight off the dough, but when the arm has risen a certain distance it contacts a stop (54, Fig. 2, not shown) provided on the chain above the end 49a of the arm and thus takes up the weight, which thereupon opposes ascent of the arm. The belts 1, 2 and the roller 14 are driven by an endless chain 12 and sprockets from an electric motor.
