Abstract

Carbon electrodes are coated or impregnated with an organic compound of silicon which is decomposed by heat or hydrolysis to yield silica. Rare earth elements may be present. The compound may be dimethyl silicone which is hydrolysed at below 200 DEG C. when mixed with the carbon in paste form, or decomposed by heating at 500 DEG C. Other examples are methyl and ethyl meta- or orthosilicates. The amount of silicon present is below 2 per cent, preferably 0.2-0.6 per cent.
