[Class 83 (iii)] A scroll chuck comprises gripping jaws 15 slidable radially in the chuck body and provided on their inner faces with teeth 16 for engaging a spiral tooth or scroll 18 on the outer face of a member 17 which is rotatable about the axis of rotation of the chuck by a key through contrate gearing 19, 20. The member 17 is in the form of a ring accommodated in an annular groove 13 in the main part 10 of the chuck body; the scroll 18 is provided on one side of the ring and annular gear teeth 19 are formed on its opposite side for engagement with pinions 20 rotatably mounted in the back plate 11 of the chuck body; the head of each pinion has a square-section socket 26 engageable by the operating key.
