Abstract

645,897. Rocket propulsion devices. HUTCHISON, A. C., WILSON, M., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 3, 1948, No. 6636. [Class 9 (ii)] A reaction propulsion device for propelling toys or models comprises a cylindrical casing of heat-insulating material closed at one end and containing a compressed charge of guanidine nitrate and/or nitroguanidine mixed with a solid sensitizer. Furthermore the sensitizer is sufficient on application of heat to the mixture to enable the propagation of a self-sustained exothermic gasproducing non-explosive decomposition, the gas escaping through one or more openings of predetermined dimensions in a terminal wall spaced from the charge. Fig. 3 shows a cardboard cylinder 9 turned over a cardboard disc 10 and fitted within a cardboard cylinder 12 turned'over a tinplate disc 13. The disc 13 rests on the open end 15 of the first cylinder and has a cylindrical orifice 16 with diameter 1/10 that of the disc. The cylinders are 3.8 cms. long and are bonded together by adhesive. The internal diameter of the inner cylinder is 1.9 cm. and the external diameter of the outer cylinder is 2.05 cm. A preformed pellet 17 fitting the inner cylinder consists of a mixture of guanidine nitrate 91.0 per cent, 2:4 dinitroresorcinol 8 per cent, asbestos fibre 0.3 per cent, vanadium pentoxide 0.5 per cent and potassium nitrate 0.2 per cent, all parts being by weight. A.wire gauze 18 is placed on a wick 19, the combined length of pellet, wick and gauze being 2.1 cm. and of the air space above 0.75 cm. Should the pressure rise above 5 atmospheres the turned-over end 14 of the outer cylinder is forced out. The wick 19 can be ignited by inserting a wick through the orifice 16 and igniting the protruding end. The charge develops a working pressure of 3 atmospheres, and a thrust of 28 grams weight is maintained for 15 secs. Alternative substances are given for inclusion in the charge. Specification 644,073 is referred to.
