Abstract

Pyrophoric compositions are prepared by mixing in the ratio of their atomic weights dried and powdered sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide with finely divided aluminium. One third the volume of a container is filled with sodium hydroxide powder and the powdered aluminium is then added and the container shaken to mix the powders. The mixture is said to burn when exposed to air in which moisture is present. When potassium hydroxide is used, it is first heated and melted with about 5 per cent of colophony before mixing with the aluminium powder in the proportion potassium hydroxide with colophony: aluminium 68.5:31.5 parts by weight. To change the powder mixtures to a granular form the pyrophoric composition is drenched in a solution of colophony in petrol, the petrol is then evaporated and the resultant mass crumbled into granules. The powder mixture may also be formed into a paste by adding a liquid hydrocarbon to the mixture. Instead of a liquid hydrocarbon boiled linseed oil, castor oil or rape-seed oil may be used. A porous, fragile body may be made by adding to the granular form of the composition condensed waterglass.
