Abstract
645,699. Railway signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. June 6, 1947, No. 14997. Convention date, Feb. 27, 1946. [Class 105] [Also in Groups XXXVI and XL (c)] A radar control system for a railway has a transmitter and a receiver at at least one terminal station, responder beacons with artificially-delayed response at danger points along the track, and a transmitter and receiver on each train to indicate the location of other trains and of the warning beacons, and to give warning or automatically reduce the speed of the train in the vicinity of the beacons or other traffic. All signals are carried by a radiating transmission line 2 (see Group XXXVI) mounted close to the track and provided at regular intervals with automatic repeater stations 3 ... 5 (see Group XL (c)). At the west (main) terminal station 9 the transmitter/receiver (see Group XL (c)) indicates the location of all traffic and of the fixed beacons on a cathode-ray tube range display. At the east terminal station 10 the received radar pulses are either re-transmitted with a characteristic shape, or the west terminal equipment may be duplicated. Automatic responder beacons 6 ... 8, provided along the track to indicate danger points comprise, Fig. 3 (not shown), a receiver, a delay device, a signalling circuit for characteristically shaping or occulting the pulses, and a transmitter. The delay corresponds to an object any desired distance ahead of a train interrogating the beacon. Each train carries a radar transmitter/receiver which operates a location indicator as at the terminal stations and a speed controller (see Group XL (c)) which, as the train approaches another, either operates warning devices or actuates circuits to control the speed of the train. The controller is adjustable manually or automatically to give earlier or later warning according to the speed and weight of the train, braking conditions, &c.
