Abstract
Isobutylene-acrylonitrile copolymers (preferably containing 65-85 per cent acrylonitrile and 35-15 per cent isobutylene) are moulded to form gramophone records. Co-polymerization may be effected in oil phase or aqueous emulsion at elevated temperature using catalysts, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate, benzoyl peroxide, acetyl peroxide or tertiary butyl hydroperoxide, regulators, e.g. dodecyl mercaptan, emulsifying agents, e.g. dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate, a soap or formaldehyde condensed with the sodium salt of naphthalene sulphonic acid. The resulting copolymer of concentration 10-50 per cent by weight is flocculated, e.g. by brine, filtered, washed and dried. In a modified co-polymerization process acrylonitrile is added gradually. Plasticizers, dyes, pigments, fillers or other resins may be added before moulding.
